it involves installing the Print Management snap-in on your system, I used instructions below to upload drivers from my windows 7 laptop to the windows 2008 print server. One caveat is that the user cannot delete the deployed printer, but that's not a big deal as long as we remove the printer from deployment when that unit is taken out of service. In the past I've seen a printer installed from a share and everyone can see what preferences have been set by each user. I also discovered that users can make changes to printing preferences and those are not replicated back to the print server, so basically they can configure custom settings and those will stay local to their machine, just like a TCP/IP printer. The biggest thing is that we have multiple Sharp's in multiple offices, so I'll need to create GPO's for each printer or office so only those printers will be deployed to the people that need them. I've done away with trying to set up these Sharp's as TCP/IP printers altogether. Then in group policy preferences I created a new item to "update" the printer and set it as the default if necessary, otherwise the user would have to manually make the printer their default. My workaround now is to "deploy with group policy" from the print server and apply it to a GPO for that particular printer and check the box "The users that this GPO applies to (per user). Any new ideas for me?Īs with everything, there are many ways to do things. We have a few MX2600N's, a MX2700N, MX3501N, and MX4101N that are the problem. We have several other HP printers that work without issue in group policy preferences along with 3 other Savin units too, so I don't know why the Sharp's are such an issue. I'd rather not have it work this way because then I'd have to either leave an extra printer sit on the user's machine or remove the deployed printer.
Then with the next gpupdate, the TCP/IP printer will also appear since the print server sent down the drivers needed for the printer.

Then the printer will install as a shared printer. The only way I've been able to successfully get the printer installed as a TCP/IP printer is go to the print server and "deploy with group policy" and attach it to the GPO I've set up and check the box "The users that this GPO applies to (per user).

The specified printer driver was not found on the system and needs to be downloaded'. On the client I'm trying to install the printer to, I get the following warning in the application log: Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070bcb.

We are running a Windows Server 2008 R2 with 64 bit Windows 7 clients. I've tried every combination I can think of with disabling and enabling the Point and Print restrtictions and various other combinations in group policy. I've been struggling to get our Sharp MFPs to install as TCP/IP printers through group policy preferences.
